For years, diners were handed a limited menu when it came to Indian restaurants. They could choose either upscale, fine-dining establishments or low-end curry shops. There was no middle ground. That is, until the first Café Spice opened in July 1998.

In 1998, after realizing the need for a casual Indian meal, Sushi Malhotra, founder of Dawat, New York’s most acclaimed Indian restaurant, decided to take Indian cuisine to a new level. With that goal in mind, Mr. Malhotra joined with Rajesh Bhardwaj to create a vibrant and contemporary Indian bistro—Café Spice.

Food is good. Portions are very small for the price.

The Murg Tikka Lababdar Lunch Entree was awesome, I could've enjoyed more though it was very tastey. Also you may need to add more rice to your order, not to great of a portion.

if they can't deliver in timely manner to Downtown, they should include Downtown in their delivery zone. 1 and 10 min is not an acceptable delivery time.

Descent Indian food but the food is way over priced. I was especially outraged and saddened by the naan. Who charges $3.50 for one piece of naan?! and it ain't even that good. The whole point of eating Indian food is to eat it with naan (or at least in my opinion).

Oily Saag Paneer and over an inch of water on the bottom of my Palak Papri Chat made this meal nearly inedible. I have eaten here (mostly take-out) since 2004 and only recently (last 9 months or so) has the food been so terrible. The food looks and tastes "thrown-together", I will never order food from here again- I suggest that if one does, they prepare themselves for a phone call to the restaurant and a disappointing meal.

Over priced but pretty tasty.

Food is still not here- over 40min late. Truly the last time ordering from this restaurant.

Food was delivered after an hour and a half (they estimated a 30 minute wait). When it arrived, it was freezing and congealed. I called the manager and he offered me a free appetizer the next time I ordered from them... not really good enough.

THESE IDIOTS DONT DESERVE TO HAVE BUSINESS. NEVER GOING TO ORDER FOOD FROM THIS PLACE. RECOMMEND YOU GUYS NOT TO AS WELL....

great food, but where is the chicken tiki masala on the menu?

Food was bland. Sauce very watery. All in all fairly close to inedible. And so pricey! I would not recommend.

portions are ridiculously small, even more so given the high prices. breads were rubbery, paneer was underseasoned, and meats (with the exception of seekh kabob) were overcooked. i would definitely not eat here again -- you can get better food for half the price elsewhere.

Good food (repeat customer), poor drink packaging - leaky lassi over everything. Skip the drinks and you'll be fine.

Not good. Khaday Masala Ka Gosht was oily and had no vegetables (though I'm not sure if its supposed to have vegetables). The yellow lentil side item was basically inedible. The garlic naan was mediocre. If you live in the village, I strongly recommend Baluchi's over Cafe Spice.

It's the Olive Garden of Indian Food. Stick to the restaurants around 28th & Lex. Also poor value for the $

This was bad, very bad. Arrived substantially late - 30-45min estimate was 1hr 15min - the food was slightly warm, certainly not eating hot - and it was hugely overpriced. Probably about 5 cubes of lamb, plus a stackload of lentils and rice for $36. Don't go near this place unless it can improve its performance and value for money. period.

This restaurant is a pretty standard for the local NYU kiddies, which means I won't be coming back. However, the food was not half bad. The saag paneer was average, with too much fennel that overpowered the entire dish. The samosas were fried potatoes, still average. The one appetizer (with spinach crisps) was delicious - served cold with green curry and yogurt on top of chick peas- a bit messy but well worth it. The almond chicken curry was too nutty - and the fact that none of it was worth wrapping up says a lot.

The food's not bad (not great either), but everything is overpriced and it's usually very crowded. There are a lot of better Indian choices in the neighborhood.
